The Sustainable Impact of Agave
Agave plants are perhaps most known for their by-product, tequila, for which they are primarily cultivated. During
the distillation process, only the heart of the agave plant is used, which leaves behind a large amount of waste.
Consider that for every liter of tequila produced, 11 pounds of pulp are left over. Further exacerbating the issue,
when agave waste is disposed of in landfills, it contaminates soil and water, ultimately causing ecological damage.
At Sustainable Agave, we made it our mission to stop this problem. Since our inception, we have been able to divert
70,000+ pounds of agave waste, mitigating the impact of approximately half a million bottles of tequila. Our
products, including our agave cutlery, are crafted from upcycled agave pulp, reimaging the excess from the tequila
industry and simultaneously reducing the need for virgin resources such as rapeseed and canola oils, sugarcane,
corn, tree pulp, and bamboo.
As a benchmark, Pier2Pier conducted a comparative analysis that found a five-pound case of disposable products
imported from China had a C02 footprint nearly five times greater than a similar-sized case of our straw products
imported from Mexico to the U.S. When you choose Sustainable Agave products, you pioneer the diversion of agave
waste alongside a decreased demand for materials known to emit addition carbon, both through their process and
transport. Promote sustainability and reduce environmental impact, without compromising on quality.
