Environmental Impact of Choosing Agave
Agave is largely farmed for the by-product distillation. However, it also generates a significant amount of
agro-industrial excess, which is harmful to the environment.
The heart of the agave plant is all that is used in tequila making, meaning the process generates a lot of waste.
For
reference, every liter of tequila produced has 11 pounds of pulp left over. When placed in a landfill, this
contaminates
both soil and water supplies, causing ecological dead zones. Until now, millions of tons of agave waste end up in
rural
southwestern landfills each year as a direct by-product of the tequila and nectar industries.
To date, Sustainable Agave has diverted 70,000 lbs of agave waste from entering landfills. Our goal is to erase the
impact of nearly half a million bottles of tequila. Our products are made from upcycled materials, reducing the
demand
for farmed and virgin raw materials like:
- Rapeseed
- Canola
- Sugarcane
- Corn
- Tree pulp
- Bamboo
In an exercise on Pier2Pier, a five pound case of disposables products imported from China had a CO2 footprint of
nearly five times that of a similar-sized case of our straw products imported to the U.S. from Mexico.
By choosing Sustainable Agave, you contribute to sustainability, ensuring agave waste is diverted and also reducing
the need for farmed materials that emit additional carbon into the atmosphere through their processing methods.
